Jim's Devotional - October 3rd
October 3rd
After Jesus told His disciples they were the salt of the earth, He said they were also the light of the World (Matthew 5:14).
John 9:5 is of the utmost importance to understanding the believer’s position of being the “light of the world.” “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” We must ask, “how was Jesus the light of the world?”
The world at the time of Jesus was far removed from the original intent of the Father. Our Father’s passion was always relational. In John 17:24 Jesus said, “Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.” Jesus was not speaking so much about geographically “may be with Me where I am” but relationally, “You loved Me before the foundation of the world.”
The “religious” world at the time of Jesus was one of self-righteousness and superstition. Jesus brought the love of the Father to a dark world.
Jesus is no longer physically in the world, but we are. Now, we are the “light of the world.” Or rather, “light to the world.” John 17:20-23, “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; 21 “that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 “And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: 23 “I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.”
